When you’re certain in getting a dog, Ill bet you dreamt about the countless times youd have with your new best friend. Nonetheless, there are things that you need to deliberate in order to keep your pooch healthy and happy. Things that possibly youd rather not even think about!

 When you visit your veterinarian he may request you to bring a urine sample from your dog. How do you do this? Your dog confidently wont be able to hit a sample bottle. The coolest way to complete this is to tape a polyethylene vial to the end of a yard stick. While your dog is playing, position the container beneath his urine stream.

 This is stress-free to do with male dogs than female dogs but you can habitually get a tester with one or two tries. Your veterinarian will need as fresh a sample as thinkable so if you wont be compiling the sample to the vet right away, keep it chilled until you bring it in. Your veterinarian will be examining the sample for a range of stuffs like bacteria and crystals. If bacteria are found it possibly will mean that your pooch has a urinary tract infection and will most probable necessitate your dog to be put in a sequence of antibiotics. Crystals form in the urine when minerals bind together, there are numerous different kinds of crystals and these are peak often treated with prescription diets.

If your veterinarian requests for a stool sample it might mean that he doubts that intestinal parasites are troubling your dog. They can acquire these by eating fecal matter from carcasses, unsavory things and another affected animal. You will want to get in a fresh sample. The doctor will inspect it under the optical microscope and look for telltale eggs of parasites. Commonest parasites are roundworms, roundworms, whipworms, hookworms and tapeworms. Several of today’s regular heartworm treatments also protect against hookworms and roundworms. If you’re living in the country where your dog stays outside for much of the day, he may prerequisite to be cured with a tapeworm wormer on a trimestral basis. Other diseases alike coccidia, can also be seen under the optical microscope from your dog’s stool sample.

So, now you can discuss about those unpleasant things! Its imperative that you are accurately educated and can identify signs and symptoms so that you keep your dog as in fine fettle as he can be.

The Imposter!

It’s Tuesday night and Zoomy has her obedience class with Mica, her 14 year old junior handler, coming up. I don’t hear the doorbell but do hear the pounding on the door. By the time I get to the door, find the leash and fumble with the key, the minivan is turning around to leave. I bang on the door, call “Zoomy” (who comes right away for a change), snap on the leash, open the door and let go of the happy girl who hops right into the kennel in the back of the minivan.

I finally sit down to relax and watch as Taiko and Ziva play (she’s on her back, he’s on top of her and they’re wrestling) I catch a glimpse of a purple collar — Zoomy has a new purple collar but Ziva is supposed to have a beige collar. I call Zivas name and up pops Zoomy.

OH NO, I sent an imposter to class!

I hop in the truck with Zoomy and get to the class just as Mica’s mom is pulling out to come pick up the real Zoomy. She pulled back in and reported that Mica mentioned that “Zoomy” sailed into the crate - she usually sits there and takes her own sweet time before hopping in. But it wasn’t until they got inside that she realized she had the wrong girl.

Oh well, never let it be said that Ziva isn’t an opportunist!

1.0 Cinnamon

Cinnamon has been used for many centuries as a spice and as a medicine. Cinnamon is actually the brown bark of the cinnamon tree. There are two varieties of cinnamon tree:
  • Ceylon Cinnamon Tree - the bark is used to make Ceylon Cinnamon;
  • Chinese Cinnamon Tree - the bark is used to make Cassia Cinnamon.

Which Type of Cinnamon is Safe for Your Dog and Cat?

Ceylon cinnamon does not contain measurable amounts of courmarin;
Cassia cinnamon does contain levels of courmarin that may pose a health risk;
  • Courmarin is a naturally occurring organic chemical compound that is present in many plants;
    •  However some plants contain a much higher level of courmarin (i.e. cassia cinnamon, sweet clover, sweet grass and sweet woodruff);
    • Courmarin has a bitter taste as it is meant to help the plant defend itself against threat of consumption;
    • This explains why Ceylon cinnamon has a sweeter taste than cassia cinnamon;
  • When high levels of courmarin are consumed on a daily basis in combination with other substances that may contain a naturally occurring mold - a powerful anticoagulant is formed within the body which may lead to bleeding disorders.
For this reason it is best to use Ceylon Cinnamon, not Cassia Cinnamon for your dog and cat.

The healing properties of cinnamon come primarily from three essential oils (listed just below) and from a number of volatile substances. The essential oils are:

    Wickedly Smart

    Why do so many Curly fanciers love these dogs?

    The breed standard for the Curly-Coated Retriever states:

    ". . . The Curly is wickedly smart and highly trainable and, as such, is cherished as much for his role as loyal companion at home as he is in the field. . . ." ***

    Curlies have an innate problem solving ability that requires a lot of creativity. Many people have developed an opinion of what "wickedly smart" means based on things their Curlies have done.

    Here is one of my own examples:

    Bath day at our house used to consist of everyone getting a bath then going to the basement to dry. They would each get a rawhide chew (chewie) as they went down the steps and were content to stay in the basement and work on those chewies until they were dry.

    One day, Hunter needed to prepare for a vet visit scheduled for the next day so he was the only one who got a bath. As I sent him down the steps into the basement with his chewie Singer ran down the steps expecting a chewie too.

    I laughed at her and told her "No bath, No chewie". She barked at me, trying to make a good case for getting her own chewie but I just repeated myself, "No bath, No chewie". We left Hunter in the basement and I brought her back up with me so she wouldnt pester him for his chewie.

    Back upstairs, I went to the study to do some work and didnt give her another thought, but I kept hearing her barking from the other end of the house.

    Finally, out of desperation, I got up to go find her and there she was, standing in the bathtub, barking for me to "Come".

    "OK" I said, "You can have a bath". Yes, I stopped right then and there and gave her a bath, then sent her to the basement with her chewie.

    She was happy. She had to work through the problem to get what she wanted, but she succeeded.

    Other folks have many, many tales of their Curlies exploits - some much more wicked, but all equally smart.

    Q & A For the Day:

    Why are Curlies referred to as "potato chip dogs"?

    Because it is hard to stop with just one!

    Yet another cousin.
    The Entlebucher Sennenhund or Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the last in the Swiss MountainDog breeds.  The breed is named after a town and region in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. It is the smallest of the Swiss Mountain Dogs. While its origin is not certain, it is thought to be descended from the fighting and guarding mastiffs of the Roman legions. This breed is popular in Switzerland, but is rarely seen outside its native land.
